FIRST of its kind, Expedition Air launches an eCommerce site dedicated to selling consumer products that are made from carbon emissions.

Each year, approximately 35 billion tons of carbon emissions enter the atmosphere and, according to Columbia University, “emissions associated with manufacturing and distributing consumer products make up more than 70% of all human-created greenhouse gas emissions”. Each day, we get closer to hitting the point where the impacts of climate change are irreversible. There is an urgent need to democratize access to climate solutions.

Expedition Air’s mission is to fill that void by creating products differently using carbon emissions. The collective goal is to make low-carbon materials accessible, so companies can choose to integrate circular economy models into their supply chains and consumers can use their buying power to enforce the need for products that make the planet cleaner and safer.

Expedition Air’s parent company, Carbon Upcycling Technologies, is a Calgary-based carbon utilization company and a top 10 finalist in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE and a winner of the 2019 76West Competition. Carbon Upcycling Technologies started developing consumer products made from its carbon-derived materials in 2019, and in 2021, it decided to launch Expedition Air as its consumer-facing brand.

Madison Savilow, Venture Lead for Expedition Air, says that “the goal of Expedition Air is to fundamentally change the way people perceive the world around them. We believe that every product a consumer interacts with should enable a low carbon future.”

Expedition Air connects world-leading carbon capture and utilization technologies to consumer product manufacturers; therefore, facilitating the displacement of carbon-intensive materials that are used to manufacture conventional products. Expedition Air’s current partners are making low-carbon consumer products such as soap, concrete planters, paintings, pens, and even yoga mats.

Savilow says these products are just the beginning for Expedition Air, “what if every product you interacted with was a carbon sink, making our world just that much safer? Imagine shopping for a basketball for your niece's birthday or a confidence boosting dress-shirt for that dream job you just got, and upon checking the tag, you find that it is made from carbon dioxide. We're not so far from that reality!”

Each purchase supports the advancement of carbon capture and utilization technologies and, in addition to the carbon in the products, Expedition Air offsets all other sources of emissions associated with the products, including emissions from the packaging and shipping. Their products support ongoing carbon removal projects through these offset purchases.

Expedition Air also believes that art is a key component of engaging the public so they offer an annual Artist in Residence program through which artists have access to material and technical support to create artwork incorporating carbontech. Annalee Levin was the first artist in this program and launched her own business centred around carbontech called Captured Carbon Studio.

Levin describes her time as an Artist of Residence, “it was a dream to work with Expedition Air and use Carbon Upcycling Technologies’ materials in this project. My goal with Captured Carbon Studio has been to create artwork and consumer products to help educate the general public about carbon capture and the ways in which upcycled CO2 emissions can be used for our benefit. Two of my products, a set of crayons and a palette of watercolors, were designed to excite the imagination of the user by giving them the direct experience of creating something artistic out of CO2."

To realize their vision of every product enabling a low carbon future, Expedition Air has already signed 6 consumer product manufactures and 2 carbon capture and utilization companies that provide CO2-derived raw materials for use in the products. Expedition Air is currently accepting new applications for both material and consumer product partners.

Making low-carbon materials accessible to all supply chains allows and empowers consumers to use their buying power to enforce the need for products made from carbon dioxide that help rather than hinder our planet.
